“Real men don’t use manuals!”

Last night (Friday, February 6, 2009) I decided to “bookmark” one of my favorite web-sites, http://www.warbirdalley.com/acft.htm
“Bookmark” is “favorite” to Internet-Explorer users.
I use http://www.warbirdalley.com/acft.htm lotsa times to get information on some of my favorite WWII war-planes, e.g. the P51 Mustang, the Grumman Bearcat, or the Chance Vought Corsair.
I have another web-site as my GG1 site: http://www.spikesys.com/GG1/
That’s not bookmarked, since it gets used in my GG1 stories. I have the complete href copied for pasting.
Another warbird site I have bookmarked is http://www.mustangsmustangs.com/p-51/avi.audio/P-51FlyBy.wav, since that is the P51 flyover soundfile.
Every time I play that thing: YOW-ZUH!
So I bookmark “http://www.warbirdalley.com/acft.htm,” and fire up “organize bookmarks.”
It’s no longer what it was at first, which was very similar to Internet-Explorer’s “organize favorites.”
FireFox (“Fox-Fire”) has done at least 10 upgrades since I installed it; most very minor.
But one upgrade reconfigured “organize bookmarks;” and I couldn’t science it out.
The upgrade retained my folders (e.g. Google, blog, “insanity,” trains, etc.), and I could drag new bookmarks into these folders.
But I needed an additional sub-folder: “Warbirds.”
Okay, how does one create a folder in FireFox?
No buttons, no preferences, no menu items.
As you can see, I have no manual, and am approaching it the old MAC-Evangelist way: try this and try that.
Finally I notice “organize bookmarks” has an additional mysterious button with a gear on it.
I click it, and suddenly a menu appears, including “create folder.”
But it’s dead; not active.
So I select a main toolbar folder (my “Bobbalew” folder), and try that gear-button again.
“Create folder” is now live, so I create a “Warbirds” sub-folder in my “Bobbalew” toolbar folder and drag http://www.warbirdalley.com/acft.htm into that.
“Get outta here with that manual. Real men don’t use manuals!”

  • “‘Pyooter” equals “computer.”
  • All my siblings are Microsoft “Internet-Explorer users,” but I use FireFox (“Fox-Fire”); so I am reprehensible and stupid. (“Fox-Fire” is their derogatory mispronunciation of FireFox.)
  • The Pennsylvania Railroad’s GG1 electric locomotive is the greatest railroad locomotive of all time.
  • “href” is an HTML tag — clicked on, it leads to a web-site. “GG1” (above) is an href tag (“H-ref”).
  • The “P51 Mustang” is fabulous WWII propeller fighter-plane. (I like propeller airplanes.) —So are the Bearcat and the Corsair.
  • RE: The “train” folder....... —I’m a railfan, and have been since I was a child.
  • The “MAC-Evangelist” was a fellow employee at the Canandaigua Daily-Messenger newspaper, from where I retired over three years ago. His name was Bob Hartle (“HARR-dul”), and he convinced me to buy an Apple Macintosh computer — saying it was superior for the Photoshop application. (Seemed to be, at that time.) —With a new computer software application, he just tried anything and everything — never had a manual — until he mastered it.
  • “Get outta here with that manual. Real men don’t use manuals!” is something I said to a good friend at the Canandaigua Daily-Messenger newspaper who was trying to show me how to do something in the “Quark” computer software application.
