Browsers

Last Tuesday (September 2, 2008) I visited the mighty Mezz to unload some excess produce from our garden, mainly a surfeit of zucchinis.
I saw my old friend Queenie, perhaps the best news hound I’ve ever met.
Queenie always had her feet solidly on the ground. I guess that makes her a liberial (dread).
Queenie quite often wasn’t there when I visited last year, but now, perhaps with the new owners, I see her nearly every visit.
So I strode into her cubicle, and deftly placed a zucchini next to her keyboard.
What ho; Queenie is firing up her so-called “silly MAC” flatscreen, and it’s the browser face of FireFox (“Fox-Fire”).
A while ago I got an e-mail from Matt Ried, the old webmaster at the mighty Mezz, who recently quit and moved to Denver.
He’d started a blog, and it was on “blogspot,” the same place I do my blog.
So I responded, explaining I used FireFox, because Internet-Explorer was such a drudge, and wouldn’t let me upload pictures.
“I always use FireFox,” he responded. “Haven’t used Internet-Explorer in years. I never threw it out; because some sites only work with IE.”
Ried is driving a Windoze PC.
Now if you-all wanna be mired in the last century, I can’t stop you. The GeezerGlide browser.
Continue using the browser Granny uses.
But technology has moved on.
About all IE has any more is Auto-Fill, and in my humble experience that can be erratic.
Since when is the town I live in “2403 State Route 65;” and the state I live in “Bloomfield?”
FireFox is the better browser.
It’s just that some web-sites are still mired in the last century too.
For which reason I, like Ried, keep Internet-Explorer just in case.
And it was screwing up the Leanin Tree site, compared to FireFox, which wasn’t.

  • The “mighty Mezz” is the Canandaigua Daily-Messenger newspaper, from where I retired over two years ago. Best job I ever had.
  • “Queenie” is Lenore Friend, the so-called “queen of the newsroom.”
  • “Liberial” is how my loudmouthed macho brother-from-Boston noisily insists “liberal” is spelled. (Recently it’s “liberila.”) —Since all my siblings, particularly my blowhard brother-in-Boston, are tub-thumping Conservatives, and I’m a so-called “liberial,” liberalism is reprehensible and of-the-Devil.
  • RE: “New owners......” —The Canandaigua Daily-Messenger newspaper was sold last year from its owner since 1956 to GateHouse Media.
  • RE: “Silly MAC......” —All my siblings use Windows PCs, but I use an Apple MacIntosh, so am therefore reprehensible and stupid.
  • “FireFox” and Microsoft’s “Internet-Explorer” are both Internet browsers. —My siblings all use Internet-Explorer, and noisily insist FireFox is stupid. (The old Ford versus Chevy argument.) —My siblings all mispronounce it as “Fox-Fire.”
  • “Windoze” equals the Microsoft “Windows” operating-system.
  • “GeezerGlide” is what I call all Harley Davidson ElectraGlide cruiser-bikes. My loudmouthed macho brother-in-Boston has a very laid back Harley Davidson cruiser-bike, and, like many Harley Davidson riders, is over 50 (51). So I call it his GeezerGlide.
  • I live at “2403 State Route 65, Bloomfield,” N.Y. Internet-Explorer has often auto-filled the street-address in the town-line.
  • Leanin Tree” in Boulder, Col., is a seller of cards, particularly Christmas cards. They also sell Christmas train-cards; which I send every year. (I’ve been a railfan all my life.)
